About Te Kete Ipurangi

What is Te Kete Ipurangi?

Te Kete Ipurangi – the online knowledge basket – is New Zealand’s bilingual education portal. An initiative of the Ministry of Education, it provides New Zealand schools and students with a wealth of information, resources, and curriculum materials to enhance teaching and learning, raise student achievement, and advance professional development for teaching staff and school managers.

Background to Te Kete Ipurangi

Te Kete Ipurangi came into being in 1998 with the development of the first ICT for Schools strategy. TKI was the first extensive public sector site to be developed with a no fees, open standards, philosophy and to offer bilingual navigation and a standards-based metadata search and discovery tool.

Since that time, TKI has grown to become an essential part of the teaching and learning landscape and now supports over 50 online communities and collections.

In August 2010 TKI was significantly updated, with the introduction of homepage personalisation features, an improved search, and a revised communities page.

April 2011 these features were further expanded, providing users with the ability to save and share preset homepages and refine search results by teacher-relevant criteria.

The goal is to simplify how audiences discover and share TKI's resources and to make connections between the diverse collections of content available across TKI's communities.
